Georgia legal community mourns loss of Judge Billy Lee

The Newnan Times-Herald

To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to express condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of retired Coweta Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge William F. “Billy” Lee Jr. of Newnan on his passing at the age of 81.

A member of the Georgia Bar since 1967, Judge Lee began his legal career as a law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Render Morgan, then practiced law for three years with Latimer, Hadden & Stanfield in Atlanta. He returned to his hometown of Newnan in 1972, setting up a solo law practice and serving part-time as an assistant district attorney for the Coweta Circuit. He was appointed as district attorney for the Coweta Circuit in 1975 and was elected as a Superior Court judge in 1980, serving 32 years before retiring in 2012 as the longest-serving Superior Court judge in the Coweta Circuit.

Judge Billy Lee’s distinguished career of service is an inspiration to all members of the State Bar of Georgia. We are appreciative of his many contributions to the legal profession and justice system of our state. He will be missed and fondly remembered.

Sincerely,

Ivy N. Cadle
President, State Bar of Georgia
