To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to express condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of Michael L. “Mike” Monahan, longtime director of the Pro Bono Resource Center, a joint project of the State Bar and the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP), on his untimely passing at the age of 64.

A native of Wheeling, West Virginia, and resident of Dallas, Georgia, he was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1989 and began his legal career as a staff attorney for GLSP’s Migrant Project in Tifton, where he represented farmworkers. He later became the project’s supervising attorney and then managing attorney and, subsequently, director of GLSP’s Pro Bono Unit and director of the Pro Bono Resource Center.

A treasured member of the State Bar of Georgia family, Mike also served as staff liaison to our Access to Justice Committee and served on national task forces to draft and improve pro bono service delivery standards with the Legal Services Corp. and the American Bar Association among other organizations.

Mike earned national recognition for his work in providing legal representation for those who are unable to afford a lawyer, receiving the Pro Bono Professional of the Year Award, the State Bar of Georgia Access to Justice Committee’s Dan Bradley Award, the Georgia Clients Council Veda McKnight Technology Award, the Georgia Microenterprise Network Builder Award and the Wheeling Jesuit University Distinguished Alumni Award and induction into the university’s Hall of Honor.

Mike Monahan’s exemplary career of helping lower-income Georgians obtain necessary legal services is an inspiration to all members of the State Bar. We are appreciative of his many contributions to the legal profession’s pro bono programs and our justice system. He will be missed and fondly remembered.

Sincerely,

Ivy N. Cadle
President, State Bar of Georgia
